40 FREE FX Plugins That Shouldn’t Be FREE

There are thousands of free effects plugins out there, but let's be honest — you probably don't need most of them.

So I went through a ridiculous amount of free plugins and narrowed everything down to 40 effects I think are genuinely worth checking out — covering reverb, delay, EQ, clipping, vocal processing, distortion and some much stranger sound-design tools.

The Best Free FX Plugins

1. Reverie – Quiet Music

Reverie is a seriously interesting resonator and sound-design effect that uses sympathetic string modelling to transform whatever audio you feed into it.

Put drums, vocals, pads or random recordings through it and you can turn them into shimmering harmonic textures, drones and completely different sounds.

2. Parrot – Darkpalace Studio

Parrot is a creative multi-band delay and texturing plugin with three parallel processing paths.

Each band can have its own delay and effect processing, including saturation, pitch shifting, bitcrushing, dispersing, chorus and more, making this much more than a normal delay plugin.

3. TIME-12 – TiagoLr

TIME-12 is an envelope-based delay modulator designed for creating rhythmic, warped and constantly changing delay effects.

You can draw modulation shapes, build patterns and sequence different movements in sync with your project.

4. ANINA – CRQL / Ewan Bristow

ANINA is one of the more experimental effects in the list, built for manipulating dynamics, filtering and movement in creative ways.

Definitely one for producers who like plugins that can produce unexpected results rather than another normal bread-and-butter effect.

5. Spoton – Sixth Sample

Spoton is a free automatic pitch-correction plugin designed to make vocal tuning quick and simple.

Select the notes you want your vocal tuned to, then use the Amount and Speed controls to go from subtle correction to much more obvious tuning effects.

6. Kilohearts Essentials – 34 FREE FX Plugins

This is where the list gets slightly ridiculous.

Kilohearts Essentials currently gives you 34 individual effects completely free.

The collection covers almost everything: compressor, limiter, delay, reverb, distortion, chorus, flanger, phaser, pitch shifting, tape stop, transient shaping, filters, EQ, gating, stereo tools and loads more.

So downloading this one bundle basically gives you an entire FX plugin folder in one go.

7. Valhalla Supermassive

Supermassive has become one of those free plugins that almost needs no introduction.

It specialises in absolutely huge reverbs, delays, echoes and atmospheric spaces — perfect for pads, vocals, synths and cinematic sound design.

8. Freakshow Industries Backmask

Backmask might be the weirdest plugin on this entire list.

It is a chaotic reversing effect made for mangling audio into backwards glitches, strange textures and things that sound like your DAW may genuinely be haunted.

Freakshow famously lets users either buy the plugin or use its own “steal” option to obtain a fully functional licence.

9. Cymatics Deja Vu

Deja Vu is a free creative timing effect built for transforming melodies, loops and samples.

It is brilliant for creating slower, warped and half-time style versions of sounds without needing to manually chop everything up.

10. Cymatics Origin

Origin is a free vintage-style effect designed to make clean digital audio sound older, darker and more degraded.

Its resampling engine is great for lo-fi melodies, filtered textures and that underwater-style effect you hear in loads of modern productions.

11. ZEEK STFU

STFU is a free volume-shaping plugin that is perfect for sidechain-style pumping, rhythmic gating and custom envelope effects.

It can sync automatically to your project or be triggered through MIDI, and you can even create two separate envelopes and morph between them.

12. Initial Clipper 2

Initial Clipper 2 is a free soft clipper designed for controlling peaks and getting more loudness from drums, 808s and full mixes.

It includes saturation shaping, true-peak control, a visual waveform display and a built-in LUFS meter, which makes it surprisingly complete for a free clipping plugin.

13. Scintillate – Sweet Audio / Signalsmith Audio

Scintillate is a free spectral reverb — or as the developers call it, a “Sparkle Engine”.

It generates spectral sparkles inside a reverb, letting you go from subtle shimmering textures to huge fluttering atmospheres and strange reverse effects.

It also won 1st place in the KVR Developer Challenge 2026, so clearly I’m not the only one who thinks this is good.

14. BattleFX – Unfiltered Audio

BattleFX takes some of the creative send effects from Unfiltered Audio's Battalion and turns them into a standalone free plugin.

You get the Shatter Delay, Headspace Reverb, EQ and Maximize processing, along with rhythmic choking controls for creating unusual ducking and movement.

15. Jeesonic EQ Pro

EQ Pro is a seriously capable free dynamic EQ with up to 24 bands.

Every band can work dynamically, with Mid/Side and Left/Right processing, selectable phase modes and a real-time spectrum analyser.

Basically, if you need a proper everyday EQ but don't want to spend anything, this is an easy one to try.
