These NEW FREE VSTs Shouldn’t Be Free

This week’s roundup has some genuinely mad free plugins — from a capybara synth and a new lo-fi instrument to spatial effects, saturation, drums and darker cinematic sounds.

1. Rev Ocean

Arturia’s new modern reverb is built for huge, evolving spaces. Great for washed-out ambience, long moving tails, atmospheric vocals, shoegaze guitars and making a simple loop feel much bigger.

2. Binaural Modulator

A free spatial movement effect that can handle subtle auto-pan, strange stereo movement, tremolo, chorus-style motion and rotating-speaker type effects. Definitely one for making static sounds feel alive.

3. Gorilla Drive

A smooth germanium-style saturation and overdrive plugin with a useful Tone Tilt control for shaping the whole sound quickly. Nice for adding warmth, weight and harmonics without completely destroying the signal.

4. Fine Classics Saturator

A flexible saturation plugin with multiple algorithms, tone shaping and transient controls. It can do subtle warmth, more obvious colour or push things toward proper distortion when needed.

5. CapySynth

Yes, it has a capybara in it. But it is also a genuinely fun free synth with loads of presets for lo-fi, house, synthwave and cosy melodic ideas. This one is worth grabbing purely because it looks ridiculous and sounds better than it has any right to.

6. Drumbo Jr

A compact drum machine with 10 factory kits, drag-and-drop samples, an effects section and plenty of controls per pad. Ideal for getting beats started quickly without loading up a massive drum library.

7. Evolve Dark Matter Lite

A dark, cinematic sample-based synth made for bass-heavy textures, drones, soundscapes and weird electronic ideas. Very useful for drum and bass, atmospheric techno, trailer-style sound design and anything that needs a bit of menace.

A free lo-fi instrument from Audiolatry packed with warm, dusty keys, pads, leads and melodic presets. Perfect for chill beats, ambient, retro pop and hazy late-night chord progressions.
